A certain respect is due from us and all humanity, not just to moving, feeling animals, but to trees and plants as well.

  1. Unfortunately this a sentiment at odds with the later, Cartesian view of animals by the French: that they are simply machines for us to use, sources of food and sport. To most modern French people the idea of respecting an animal as an animal is insane.
