This inscription is from Pliny's Naturalis Historia, II, 7
Solum certum nihil esse certi et homine nihil miserius aut superbius.
Il n'y a rien de certain que l'incertitude, et aucune créature plus minable et plus orgueilleux que l'homme.
The only certainty is that nothing is certain, and there is no creature more pathetic and more vain than man.
