This humanist sentiment runs right against what was happening in Europe at the time - when Catholics were burning Protestants horribly (see 'Foxe's Book of Martyrs') and Protestants, though to a lesser extent, were doing the same to Catholics. Montaigne stood on the Catholic side of the fence, and even served as a conciliator or negotiator between Charles IX and Protestant leaders.
